Pumpkin Patch & Winery Weekend

We love to go out to the foothills of the Shenandoah mountains at this time of year, to pick our pumpkins and get away from the madness of suburban life.  Since Mom & Dad were planning on coming this past weekend, we waited until their visit to take the trip. 

 

We started out at Hollin Farms, which is our go-to pick your own produce spot.  The location is just stunning, tucked among rolling hills.  Even though it was the weekend before Halloween, there were plenty of pumpkins to choose from.

After we selected our perfect pumpkins, we headed down the road to Three Fox Vineyard, a relatively new-to-us vineyard.  Their meadow is a gorgeous picnic spot and they have a stream that winds its way through the bottom of their property.  Skipping stones there reminds me of the streams that we played in when I was a kid.

We had a great weekend with Mom & Dad (love you!).

 

October Flea Market Finds -- Vintage

I was back at the flea market again this month, searching for items for the etsy store as well as anything that caught my eye for our house.  This month's market had a lot of good stuff, more than I had money to buy....it's always like that!  If I have a lot of money, the market is bare of good finds; if I am on a budget, it is overflowing!  Here are the things that came home with me this month.

I love the detail on the edge of these little plates -- I got a set of 9 of them, which I think would look amazing hung on a wall.

It's that time of year again!  I returned to a lady who had told me that her booth would be full of Christmas items this month.  She was true to her word & I bought almost all of her vintage ornaments.  I'm hoping that she has even more next month.

All of these items will be appearing in my etsy store.

Caught My Fancy -- October

The back to school craziness is dying down slightly & my life is a little less chaotic (finally).  Or, I should say that I made it die down because I was starting to go a little crazy!  I must remember that not every weekend needs to be packed full of activity.  Days to do whatever feels fun at the moment are just as important as checking off to dos. 

There are several fun things that have caught my fancy this month. 

Gilmore Girls - The first thing is exciting news for Gilmore Girls fans -- it is now available on Netflix streaming! 

You can get your Stars Hollow fix any time that you like and not have to wait for a disc.  I feel like Gilmore Girls is such a fall-y show, especially the first season. 

It's so full of New England foliage and small town celebrations.  It makes me feel like slipping on a sweater & drinking a mug of hot cider. 

Incidentally, while I was looking for photos for this post, I came across some pretty awesome Gilmore Girls fan goodness on the web.  Screen shots & more from the fabulous Hooked on Houses, Stars Hollow town map with key, the floor plan of Lorelai & Rory's house and at least one Stars Hollow board on Pinterest.

History Pin - I was reminded of this next one recently & spent way too long online, exploring it.  History Pin is soooo cool -- people and organisations from around the world "pin" old photos for any user to see.  You can search via location (ever wonder what your home town looked like 100 years ago?) or browse subjects via "Collections".  Here is a fun one called Fabulous Fashion

There are also "Tours" in which old photos are superimposed on their modern locations. It is so interesting to see how things have changed & what has stayed the same.  This tour of old New York stores is pretty wonderful.

Old School Cool - Finally, I love this link that popped up on my Facebook feed last week.  These photos of what "cool" was in the past define classy.  All I have to say is this: Paul Newman 1963.

Another favorite is this one of President & Caroline Kennedy, which has the caption: "Caroline Kennedy walks ahead while her father, the most powerful man in the world, carries her doll."

Bunny Williams for Ballard Designs

Have you all seen the new line that Bunny Williams has done for Ballard Designs?  I just got my catalog and I'm in love with it. 

For years, I've admired Bunny Williams' work in magazines.  To me, she is one of the designers that sets the standard for traditional good taste.  While much of her work is in very grand homes, some of it is very liveable, like this gorgeous room. 

Her collection for Ballard really brings her style to those of us in more average budgets.  My favorites of the collection are the tableware and accessories.

I'm a Sucker for Pretty Packaging

True facts about me:

1) I'll buy/watch/listen to anything British

2) I'll buy/watch/listen to anything that looks/is vintage. 

Dollar Tree came through with the second one & I was compelled to buy.

 Check out this Ivory soap in a.d.o.r.a.b.l.e vintage style wrapping.  I had to have it.  And I don't even like Ivory soap! 

OK, Dollar Tree, I'm waiting on the British stuff. 

Fall Decoration Around the House

Fall is happening around the Fleming house.  I spent last Sunday putting out pumpkins and autumn wreaths, changing everything to warm colors. We've been burning cinnamon-y candles (Bath & Body Works Pumpkin Apple is my current favorite) and drinking lots of spiced cider.  Fall is my favorite season -- everything feels so warm & cosy.

I got the idea to put out trick or treating candy in large jars from Talk of the House.  Surprisingly, we've been very good & not eating much of it.
